Why not install Ubuntu linux instead. It's free - check it out at ubuntu.org
Vista home basic is nothing more pricey than xp was at first. The home primary starts at 100 dollars and Ultimate is 400, just as an upgrade. If you buy the complete system reformatter, so it is close to a new computer, you will hold to fork over more money.
If you get the home reworked copy of Vista, it costs about $100.00. But I don't recommend that variation, because it includes absolutely zilch... just a spanking new look. The next step up, Business Version (I believe that is to say what it is called) goes for something like $200.00. That's the way to turn. But, make sure that your computer is Vista in place... otherwise you may run into some problems.
you don't need to update right away. If you really want to bring Vista, wait in the order of a year to give microsoft time to work out adjectives the bugs that will pop up.
